Trump Announces First Direct Israel–Lebanon Leader Talks
"Trying to get a little breathing room between Israel and Lebanon. It has been a long time since the two leaders have spoken, like 34 years. It will happen tomorrow," Trump stated on his social media platform Truth Social.
This development comes after a Tuesday gathering at the State Department, where Lebanese Ambassador Nada Hamadeh and Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter met under the facilitation of Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The meeting also included US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa, State Department Counsellor Michael Needham, and US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz.
Notably, the Hezbollah organization did not participate in the discussions.
Earlier, Trump mentioned that he had urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to limit military actions in Lebanon, and was informed that Israel would be "scaling back" its operations.
Despite a ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024, Israel has persisted in carrying out strikes in southern Lebanon following a cross-border attack launched by Hezbollah on March 2.
