France Pushes for Direct Israel–Lebanon Talks to Enforce Ceasefire Deal

(MENAFN) French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on Thursday emphasized that only high-level political dialogue between Israel and Lebanon can effectively secure and sustain a ceasefire between the two sides.

In comments to a media outlet, Barrot underlined the importance of “high-level dialogue between Israel and Lebanon,” saying it remains the only viable path to strengthen any ceasefire arrangement and address long-standing disputes that have persisted for decades.

Tensions have continued despite a ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024, as Israel has carried out ongoing strikes in southern Lebanon following a cross-border attack by Hezbollah on March 2.

Lebanese health officials report that the conflict has resulted in more than 2,000 deaths and forced over one million people from their homes since March.

Barrot also highlighted the importance of ensuring Lebanon is included in broader diplomatic efforts linked to upcoming US–Iran discussions aimed at ending the wider regional conflict. He warned that Lebanon “must not become the scapegoat of regional dynamics or wars it did not choose.”

He further argued that “Destroying Lebanon does not eliminate Hezbollah. On the contrary, it strengthens it,” reinforcing France’s position on the consequences of continued escalation.

Additionally, Barrot reiterated France’s call for the “full reopening” of the Strait of Hormuz and stressed the need to uphold what he described as the “common goods of humanity.”
