Israel Issues Evacuation Order for Residents of 16 Lebanese Towns

(MENAFN) The Israeli military issued urgent evacuation orders Tuesday for residents across 16 towns in southern Lebanon, marking a fresh escalation in what observers are calling a systematic erosion of the fragile ceasefire agreement between Tel Aviv and Beirut.

In a statement published on X, Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee directed residents of Ghandoorieh, Borj Qalaouiyeh, Qalaouiyeh, Sawaneh, Jmeijmeh, Safad al-Battikh, Braachit, Shaqra, Aita al-Jabal, Tebnine, Sultaniyeh, Bir al-Sanasil, Dounine, Kherbet Selem, Selaa, and Deir Kifa to immediately abandon their homes and move northward toward the Sidon area.

Adraee attributed the warning to "violations of the ceasefire by Hezbollah," while simultaneously seeking to reassure the civilian population. "The army does not intend to harm you," Adraee claimed, urging residents to evacuate their homes immediately and head toward the Sidon area for their safety. He further cautioned that anyone near Hezbollah operatives, infrastructure, or military equipment "would be at risk."

The warning lands against a backdrop of continued Israeli strikes in Lebanon despite the active truce. US President Donald Trump — who announced a 10-day ceasefire between the two sides on April 17 before extending it by three weeks on Thursday — acknowledged last week that he had sought to discourage Israel from conducting further airstrikes on Lebanon.

The human cost of the conflict prior to the truce has been staggering. Since Israel launched its offensive on March 2, at least 2,509 people have been killed and 7,755 wounded, while more than 1.6 million have been displaced, according to official figures.
